PTA Expands Internet Access with 47 New Class Licences Across Pakistan
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued 47 district-level Class Licences for internet service providers so far in 2026, as part of its strategy to expand broadband infrastructure and improve digital connectivity across the country.
According to PTA data, the licensing process began in February 2026, with one licence issued initially. The pace accelerated in the following months, with 12 licences granted in March, 14 in May, and a record 20 licences in June. Lahore received the highest number of licences with seven, followed by Sargodha, while Faisalabad and Islamabad each secured four licences. New licences were also awarded in underserved districts, including South Waziristan and Lower Chitral.

PTA said the initiative is designed to strengthen competition among internet service providers, improve last-mile broadband connectivity, and expand internet access in rural and remote areas. The authority believes the move will also encourage local entrepreneurship, attract investment, generate employment, and support the continued growth of Pakistan’s digital economy.
The district-level Class Licence is valid for 10 years. Applicants are required to pay a one-time licence fee of Rs300,000, along with an annual fee of Rs100,000 for the first year before the licence becomes effective. The annual licence fee will increase by 10% each year thereafter.
