Qatar Opposes Any Fees on Ships Passing Through Strait of Hormuz
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, has said that Doha would not support any proposal by Iran to impose charges on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that the strategic waterway should remain accessible to all nations.
In an interview with a British newspaper, the Qatari leader stated that no single country should have control over such a vital maritime route, noting that Qatar’s trade and access to international markets heavily depend on the strait.
He also highlighted the importance of the US-Iran communication hotline in reducing tensions and preventing misunderstandings that could disrupt maritime traffic. Sheikh Mohammed expressed hope that shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz could return to near normal levels within the next 30 days, while warning that some parties may attempt to undermine efforts aimed at maintaining regional stability.
