Tragedy in Peshawar’s Dir Colony as School Roof Collapse Claims 35 Lives
A devastating roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar’s Dir Colony on Thursday claimed the lives of 33 children and two female teachers, while more than 50 children were injured, according to hospital and rescue officials. The incident occurred at Al-Khair Education Centre, where around 110 children were reportedly present at the time.
Rescue teams, assisted by Pakistan Army personnel and other emergency agencies, took part in operations to recover victims trapped beneath the rubble. The children who died were aged up to 13, according to Lady Reading Hospital. The two female teachers were identified in the supplied report as 25-year-old Samreen and 27-year-old Mehwish. Several injured children were taken to hospitals, with some requiring urgent medical attention.
Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed confirmed that the school’s owner had been taken into custody. Preliminary findings pointed to the building’s weak structure and poor condition. Authorities said the narrow streets surrounding the school also made rescue operations more difficult. An inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the collapse and establish responsibility.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families. They directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. The tragedy has also raised fresh concerns about the structural safety of school buildings and the need for effective inspections.
