ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has exported donkey meat to China for the first time, marking a significant milestone in agricultural trade between the two countries. The inaugural shipment, produced in the Gwadar Free Zone, cleared customs at Tianjin Port and has officially entered the Chinese market.

The export follows the completion of bilateral protocols signed in 2024, allowing approved slaughterhouses in Gwadar to process and export donkey meat and hides. Chinese company Hengeng Trading Enterprise has invested $50 million in a modern slaughterhouse in the Gwadar North Free Zone as part of efforts to boost value-added livestock exports under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Officials said the project is expected to create jobs, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Pakistan’s livestock exports. China remains one of the world’s largest importers of donkey meat and hides, which are widely used in food products and the production of the traditional medicinal product Ejiao.
