Rising Competition: Eutelsat Targets Aviation Connectivity Amid Starlink Rivalry

Eutelsat, the European satellite operator, is stepping up competition against Elon Musk’s Starlink by offering onboard Wi-Fi services for business and commercial aircraft. The company has confirmed that it is currently providing broadband connectivity to Air Canada planes, alongside partnerships with several corporate jet operators.

Eutelsat has revealed a significant backlog in its rollout plans, with over 1,000 airplanes slated for an upgrade to the new system. This move comes at a time when concerns over Musk’s political associations, including his advisory role to former US President Donald Trump, have positioned Eutelsat as a viable alternative to Starlink. Additionally, rumors that Musk might withdraw Starlink’s services from Ukraine, a critical asset for their military resistance, have further bolstered Eutelsat’s profile.

Despite this rivalry, Eutelsat still relies heavily on Musk’s SpaceX for launching its low-orbit satellites. Meanwhile, Starlink remains dominant in the European sector, with major airlines like Air France opting for its airplane connectivity services. Eutelsat, with fewer than 700 low-orbit satellites compared to Starlink’s 7,000, is striving to directly challenge Starlink’s supremacy in satellite technology and airplane Wi-Fi services.
