UAE Launches Air-CRAFT Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

In alignment with the UAE Year of Sustainability and amidst the 3rd ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in Dubai, a groundbreaking initiative named “Air-CRAFT” was unveiled by eight founding entities. The consortium focuses on pioneering research and development in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technologies.

Air-CRAFT, which stands for the UAE Centre for Renewable and Advanced Fuel Technologies for Aviation, represents a collaborative effort across various sectors, including industrial policymakers, aviation regulators, fuel producers, academia, researchers, aircraft and powerplant manufacturers, and airline operators. This consortium, a first-of-its-kind in the region, aims to advance the production and scaling of SAF technologies.

Supported by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, Air-CRAFT addresses the pressing need for sustainable practices in the aviation sector. His Excellency Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the aviation sector’s significance as a key contributor to the GDP and emphasized its role in the country’s robust decarbonization efforts.

His Excellency Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy of the UAE and Chairman of the GCAA, underscored the consortium’s role in accelerating sustainable aviation fuel production. He stated, “This consortium, the largest and most unique in the SAF industry, represents a substantial stride towards a greener aviation future.”

The collaboration aligns with the UAE’s National SAF Roadmap principles and the global aviation industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. During CAAF/3, representatives from the eight consortium entities signed a strategic collaboration agreement to officially kickstart the Air-CRAFT initiative.

The U.S. government supports Air-CRAFT through its connection to the intergovernmental US-UAE ‘Partnership to Accelerate Transition to Clean Energy’ (PACE) agreement.

The industrial and institutional partners of the consortium invite UAE and international entities to join Air-CRAFT. The initiative is already in advanced discussions with strategic global players, with announcements expected soon.
