AKU Launches RISE Programme to Empower Early-Career Researchers, Focusing on Health Sciences and Future Expansion
Aga Khan University (AKU) has launched its Research Initiative for Scholars Excellence (RISE) programme, aimed at fostering a supportive environment for early-career researchers. The eight-month programme is designed to build capacity in health sciences, with plans to expand to social sciences in the future. The inaugural cohort of 21 participants will receive comprehensive training in grant writing, research methodology, leadership development, and academic career advancement, supported by experienced mentors.

Dr. Salim Virani, AKU Vice Provost of Research, emphasized the importance of the RISE programme, highlighting it as a critical investment in young academics. The programme was officially launched with a ceremony attended by participants from Pakistan, Kenya, and Tanzania, along with university leaders. Dr. Carl Amrhein, AKU Provost, encouraged the participants, acknowledging their role in driving AKU’s future.
The RISE leadership team from Pakistan and East Africa, including Dr. Zahra Hoodbhoy, Dr. Anthony Ngugi, Dr. Aysha Almas, and Dr. Eunice Muthoni Mwangi, shared insights on the programme’s opportunities for cross-regional collaboration. An external advisory board comprising esteemed researchers from various institutions also provides guidance, enhancing the programme’s impact.
The RISE programme aims to develop a sustainable channel of skilled researchers to advance knowledge and address societal challenges. By focusing on nurturing the next generation of research leaders, AKU reaffirms its commitment to becoming a completely research-led institution.
