Meet Bilibili, the Chinese Video Platform Blending YouTube-Style Content With Interactive Communities
Bilibili is one of China’s leading video and online entertainment platforms and is often described as a Chinese alternative to YouTube. Founded in 2009, the platform initially focused heavily on anime, comics and gaming (ACG), but has since grown into a broad video community covering technology, education, music, lifestyle, gaming, entertainment, short videos and live streaming.

One of Bilibili’s most distinctive features is its “bullet comment” or danmaku system, which allows viewers to post comments that appear directly over the video as it plays. This creates a highly interactive viewing experience and has helped Bilibili build a strong community around creators and their audiences.
Bilibili has also been looking beyond China. In August 2026, the platform announced the global rollout of an international version of its app, initially supporting Android, with iOS and additional markets planned. The expansion could give international users greater access to Bilibili’s large ecosystem of creator-generated videos and Chinese entertainment content.
