Sony FX5 Launches with AI Features, Internal RAW Recording and 5K Video
Sony has officially introduced the FX5, the latest addition to its compact Cinema Line, offering significant upgrades for professional filmmakers. While the popular FX3 remains on sale, the new FX5 arrives at a higher price point with advanced imaging capabilities, including a new 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor featuring built-in AI. The camera supports 5K video recording at up to 60fps and 4K at 120fps, with future firmware updates enabling 5K 120fps and 4K 240fps recording.

Sony Introduces FX5 Full-Frame Cinema Camera Starting at $4,900
A standout feature of the FX5 is open gate recording, which captures video using the sensor’s full 3:2 aspect ratio, providing greater flexibility for cropping, especially for vertical content creation. Sony has also introduced internal 16-bit linear RAW recording in its professional X-OCN format, eliminating the need for an external recorder. The FX5 is the first camera in Sony’s FX lineup to feature Dual Gain Shooting, delivering improved dynamic range, lower noise, and enhanced low-light performance with three native ISO settings—800, 4000, and 12800.
The camera also includes AI-powered autofocus with human pose estimation, Auto Tracing White Balance, a larger 3.5-inch fully articulating touchscreen, a built-in cooling fan, dual USB ports, wired LAN connectivity, and a redesigned CineAlta-inspired menu system. Sony has also announced an optional DVF-EL1 detachable electronic viewfinder and an XLR-H2 audio handle. The FX5 is priced at $4,900 for the body only and $5,500 with the XLR-H2 handle, with global sales set to begin in mid-August.
