A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) by Advocate Fahim Nawaz, urging the government to raise Pakistan’s minimum wage to US$1,000 (approximately Rs278,700) per month. The petition argues that Pakistan, having inherited colonial-era laws, should align its labor policies with those of developed nations like the US and UK.

The petitioner highlighted the disparity between the proposed wage and the current minimum wage of Rs37,000, deeming the latter inadequate to meet basic living standards. The plea calls for the suspension of the existing wage notification and seeks a court directive to implement this significant increase.
If enforced, the proposed wage adjustment could profoundly impact labor laws and economic conditions in the country, addressing long-standing concerns over the cost of living and workers’ welfare.
