40 Pakistanis Confirmed Dead in Greek Boat Tragedy

Athens: The death toll of Pakistani nationals in a series of recent boat accidents off the Greek coast has tragically risen to 40. The Greek Coast Guard has concluded its search and rescue operation, confirming that the missing individuals are presumed dead.

This grim milestone follows three separate incidents involving overcrowded migrant boats departing from Libya. In one particular incident, a boat carrying approximately 80 Pakistani passengers capsized due to overcrowding and a hull breach.

The Pakistani Embassy in Athens has been actively coordinating with Greek authorities to repatriate the bodies of the deceased and provide assistance to the survivors. The embassy has confirmed the identities of four of the deceased and is working diligently to confirm the identities of others.  

The tragedy has highlighted the perilous journeys undertaken by desperate migrants seeking a better life in Europe. With an estimated 5,000 Pakistanis currently residing in Libya and many more attempting to reach Europe through perilous sea routes, the need for concerted efforts to address the root causes of this human migration crisis is more urgent than ever.
