Bangladesh Announces Redesign of Currency Without Bangabandhu’s Image

In a major move, the interim government of Bangladesh has unveiled plans to redesign the country’s currency, starting with the Tk20, Tk100, Tk500, and Tk1,000 denominations. Notably, the new currency notes will no longer feature the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a prominent figure in the nation’s history.

The Ministry of Finance and Bangladesh Bank confirmed this change, indicating a shift from the current currency designs that display Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait. While only the four denominations are set for redesign initially, authorities stated that all denominations will undergo similar changes in a phased approach. A letter from the Ministry of Finance, dated September 29, instructed Bangladesh Bank to submit detailed design proposals for the new notes, with the Currency and Design Advisory Committee tasked with evaluating the updates.
