Sources indicate that between 2008 and 2013, the food department borrowed Rs 2.7 billion from commercial banks to purchase wheat. The plan was to repay the debt by selling the wheat; however, the repayment was hindered due to the wheat being stolen and wasted. Consequently, the government is now burdened with paying Rs 20 lakh in daily interest from the state treasury due to the unpaid loan.
