Agricultural experts underscored the vital importance of expanding soybean cultivation to mitigate Pakistan’s hefty $1200 million soybean import bill. These remarks were made during a soybean conference held at the Center for Advanced Studies in Agriculture and Food Security, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Thursday.

Addressing the conference, UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan announced plans to establish 1000 demonstration spots for high-yielding soybean at farmers’ fields this year, building upon the 170 farms demonstrated last year to promote crop cultivation.

Highlighting the global significance of soybeans, Dr. Khan pointed out that while China leads as the largest importer and the US as the largest exporter of this commodity, Pakistan faces a substantial import burden, particularly in edible oil, amounting to $10 billion annually. Proposing a solution, he suggested adopting strategies similar to India, which imposed import duties on soybeans to boost local cultivation and address nutritional deficiencies.
