ECP plans to set up 92,500 polling stations across the country
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) anticipates that the cost of conducting the general elections in 2024 will surpass Rs49 billion, primarily due to increased expenditures on ensuring robust security at polling stations. To accommodate the voting process on February 8, 2024, the ECP plans to set up 92,500 polling stations across the country, categorized as highly sensitive, sensitive, or normal based on their perceived levels of sensitivity.

Over 17,500 polling stations are designated as highly sensitive, with concerns over potential unrest, especially in Punjab and Sindh, where 6,599 and 4,430 such stations, respectively, will be monitored by CCTV cameras. The ECP initially requested Rs47 billion from the federal government for the elections, but with additional costs arising from transportation and heightened security arrangements, the expenses are projected to exceed Rs49 billion.

In response to security concerns and the prevailing border situation, law enforcement agencies, including police, rangers, and the army, have requested an additional Rs3.5 billion in funding. Notably, the Punjab police alone have demanded Rs1.19 billion for general duties related to the elections. As the federal government provides the requested funds in phases, the financial requirements for ensuring secure and efficient elections continue to escalate, underscoring the challenges and costs associated with maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
