LUMS Team Advances Internet Exchange Points in Pakistan with Cutting-Edge SDN Technology
Currently, Pakistan boasts three IXPs, with the LUMS team playing a pivotal role in facilitating their establishment. Leveraging infrastructure provided by the Higher Education Commission and Punjab Information Technology Board, they have made significant strides in enhancing these IXPs through the application of advanced networking technology, known as Software Defined Networking (SDN).
This groundbreaking research allows previously non-SDN-equipped IXPs to be upgraded without starting from scratch, significantly improving their functionality and efficiency. Dr. Uzmi and his team are now planning to implement this innovative technology across Pakistan’s IXPs. Their hope is that this research will attract tech giants like Facebook and Google to bolster their presence within Pakistan’s IXPs, ultimately leading to improved internet speeds in the country.
Dr. Uzmi emphasized, “Having large content distribution networks and providers hosted locally would make a big difference in providing equitable web access.” He further reaffirmed his commitment to providing Pakistani users with a “better and faster experience on par with services elsewhere in the world.”
