Lucky Draw Announcements Attracted a Large Crowd
According to police, the organisers promoted the wedding celebration and prize-distribution ceremony on social media, announcing a lucky draw featuring 50 motorcycles and a car. The announcements attracted hundreds of people, including visitors from different parts of Punjab. The situation reportedly became chaotic when the stadium gates were opened and attendees rushed towards the entrance. Police investigations indicate that a loudspeaker announcement asking people to enter the ground simultaneously contributed to the sudden rush. Video footage cited in media reports also showed security personnel struggling to control the crowd at the entrance. Dawn+1
Two Victims Identified as Police Register FIR
The deceased were identified as 30-year-old Muhammad Aqeel, a resident of Budha Goraya in Daska, and 22-year-old Rehan Arshad, from Glotian Morr in Sialkot. Aqeel died while being taken to hospital, while Rehan, who had sustained critical injuries, was shifted to Lahore for treatment but later died. Eighteen other people were injured, with several receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. An FIR was registered at Motra Police Station on October 31, naming nine suspects, including Ansar Mehmood Jatt alias Mr Patlo, his brother Kashif, venue owner Haji Shahid Javed and six other organisers. The case also includes 40 to 45 unidentified security guards. The charges include provisions relating to causing death, rioting, disobedience of official orders and damage to property. These remain allegations under investigation. Dawn+2
Six Arrested as Police Search for Mr Patlo
Sialkot District Police Officer Captain (Retired) Dost Muhammad confirmed that six suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident. Police also seized 50 motorcycles and a car reportedly arranged for the event’s lucky draw. However, Mr Patlo and other nominated suspects had not been arrested at the time of the latest reports. District Administration Had Withdrawn Event Permission
The district administration said the organisers had initially obtained a no-objection certificate for a private Mehfil-e-Sama inside an enclosed venue, scheduled to begin after Isha prayers. However, officials reportedly received information around 4pm on October 31 about a large public gathering and the use of loudspeakers. Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq subsequently cancelled the NOC, but the event allegedly continued despite the withdrawal of permission.
