ByteDance Founder Zhang Yiming Becomes Asia’s Richest Person with $105 Billion Fortune
Zhang Yiming’s wealth has increased dramatically over the years, reportedly growing eightfold since March 2019. More than $12 billion was added to his fortune during September 2026 alone, highlighting the rapid growth in his wealth linked to the success of ByteDance.
Despite being one of China and Asia’s wealthiest individuals, Zhang is known for maintaining a relatively private and low-profile lifestyle. Born in 1983 in Fujian province, China, he graduated from Nankai University in 2005 with a degree in software engineering. He also met his future wife at university, and the couple later married.
After graduating in 2005, Zhang joined Kuxun, where he was among the company’s early employees. He initially worked as an ordinary engineer but was promoted quickly and, during his second year, became responsible for a team of around 40 to 50 people. He has said that although his initial responsibility was technology, he became actively involved in product planning when the product encountered problems.
Zhang has also credited his early professional experiences with helping him develop the skills needed to build successful businesses. Recalling an experience from late 2007, he said he accompanied a sales director to meet a customer. The experience helped him understand what effective sales looked like, knowledge that later proved valuable when he established his own company and recruited employees.
Before founding ByteDance, Zhang also worked at Microsoft, but eventually left to pursue his own business ambitions. In 2012, he founded ByteDance, which later became globally known through TikTok and other digital platforms.

Interestingly, Zhang has acknowledged that he was not initially an active TikTok user. He said that for a long time he only occasionally watched TikTok videos and rarely posted anything because he believed the app was primarily for young people. Later, ByteDance introduced a requirement for employees to create TikTok videos and achieve a specific number of likes. Zhang described this as a major step for himself and an important experience in understanding the platform from a user’s perspective.
