Pakistan Seeks $10 Billion US Currency Support to Strengthen Economy

Report: Pakistan Requests $10bn Exchange Stabilization Facility from US

WASHINGTON: Pakistan has reportedly requested a $10 billion Exchange Stabilization Support Facility from the United States to strengthen its foreign exchange reserves, stabilize the rupee, and reduce reliance on IMF funding. According to Reuters, the request was made to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and seeks a five-year bilateral financial support arrangement.

The request comes as Pakistan continues implementing economic reforms under its $7 billion IMF programme and follows its recent diplomatic efforts, including helping facilitate talks related to the Iran conflict. If approved, the facility would provide a significant financial cushion and improve investor confidence while easing pressure on the country’s economy.

Pakistan narrowly avoided default in 2023 and remains dependent on external financing from international lenders and friendly countries. While the US Treasury has declined to comment, analysts say such a facility would strengthen Pakistan’s financial stability and mark a significant step in expanding economic cooperation between Islamabad and Washington.
