Devastating Floods Wreak Havoc in Afghanistan’s Nuristan, Rescue Operations Underway
KABUL: Devastating flash floods have struck Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nuristan, killing at least 23 people and leaving nearly 100 others missing, according to local authorities and international media reports.
Rescue teams are facing significant challenges in reaching people trapped beneath debris due to difficult terrain and widespread destruction. In the remote district of Parun, local residents have joined the search efforts, using wooden poles and their bare hands to look for missing family members and neighbors. Torrential floodwaters swept through the provincial capital, destroying shops, hotels and markets, while massive boulders crashed into buildings, causing extensive damage.

Residents described the disaster as one of the worst floods they had ever witnessed. Local pharmacist Farid Gul Zahir said the flood struck with terrifying force, triggering panic and chaos. “I have never seen such a devastating flood in my life. People were screaming everywhere, and it felt as if a powerful earthquake had hit the area,” he said.
Officials in Nuristan confirmed that the mayor of Parun and several government officials are among those reported missing. The Afghan Red Crescent Society has begun distributing food, clean drinking water and emergency tents to affected families, while the Ministry of Defense has deployed military personnel to assist in rescue and relief operations. The United Nations is also assessing the humanitarian situation as emergency response efforts continue.
