Lawmakers Question IT Ministry Over Weak Connectivity and Customer Support

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, chaired by Ameen Ul Haque, voiced serious concerns over the poor quality of mobile and internet services across Pakistan. The chairman also expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of the Federal IT Minister and Secretary IT, stressing that senior officials should attend meetings addressing critical issues related to the country’s digital infrastructure.

During the session, lawmakers questioned the Ministry of IT about its strategy to improve connectivity and service standards. Committee member Sadiq Memon noted that introducing advanced technologies such as 5G or even 6G would have little value if existing service quality issues, including weak coverage and slow internet speeds, remain unresolved. Members emphasized the need for tangible improvements to meet public expectations.

The committee also criticized telecom operators for inadequate customer support and urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take stricter regulatory action against companies failing to meet service standards. Lawmakers recommended issuing show-cause notices and imposing penalties on underperforming operators, stressing that better network reliability, stronger customer care, and effective oversight are essential for Pakistan’s digital transformation and future connectivity goals.
