Spotify to Launch AI Music Creation Tools for Premium Subscribers Under New UMG Deal
Spotify has reportedly signed a landmark agreement with Universal Music Group that will allow premium subscribers to create AI-generated covers and remixes directly on the streaming platform. The move represents a major step in Spotify’s AI strategy and positions the company more competitively against AI music-generation platforms such as Udio and Suno.
New Spotify-UMG Agreement Aims to Reward Artists While Expanding AI-Powered Music Features
Under the partnership, Spotify plans to introduce tools that enable users to generate AI-based music content while ensuring artists and songwriters are properly credited and compensated. According to Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norstrom, the initiative is being developed around the principles of content ownership, attribution, and fair compensation, creating an additional revenue stream for creators beyond traditional royalties.
The agreement comes as major music companies seek stronger licensing frameworks to protect their catalogs amid the rapid rise of AI-generated music. Spotify has already been expanding its use of artificial intelligence through features such as AI-powered music discovery, voice-based interactions, personalized recommendations, and playlist generation using natural-language prompts, making AI an increasingly important part of the platform’s future strategy.
