Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, has passed away at the age of 92. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi following a sudden deterioration in his health.

A respected economist and statesman, Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014. Prior to this, he held prominent roles including Finance Minister and Finance Secretary, where he played a pivotal role in shaping India’s economic reforms.

AIIMS confirmed his passing, stating, “We are deeply saddened to announce the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at 9:51 PM on December 26, 2024.” The hospital revealed that Dr. Singh was receiving medical care at home but was rushed to the emergency room after falling unconscious. Despite extensive efforts, he could not be revived.

In recent years, Dr. Singh had retired from active politics due to health concerns. His last public appearance was in January 2024, at the launch of his daughter’s book. He concluded his term in the Rajya Sabha in April 2024.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Chakwal district, now in Pakistan, Dr. Singh’s family moved to India during the partition. He pursued higher education in economics at Punjab University, Cambridge University, and Oxford University, leaving behind an enduring legacy in Indian politics and governance.
