In a surprising turn of events, a 99-year-old Italian man, known only as Antonio C, has decided to divorce his wife of nearly eight decades after discovering letters revealing an affair she had more than 60 years ago. The Telegraph reports that Antonio found the incriminating letters from his wife’s former lover in the 1950s while sorting through an old chest of drawers just before Christmas.

Upon finding the letters, Antonio confronted his 96-year-old wife, Rosa C, who admitted to the affair. Although she acknowledged her infidelity, Rosa insisted that it was ancient history and pleaded with Antonio to remain in the marriage, highlighting their long life together and their family, which includes five children, 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Despite Rosa’s attempts to reconcile, Antonio decided to move forward with the divorce. Antonio, originally from Sardinia, met Rosa in the 1930s while serving in the Italian Carabinieri in Naples. Their long history and shared life experiences were not enough to save the marriage, with local media attributing the breakup to the couple’s “southern blood.”
This decision makes Antonio and Rosa the oldest divorcees in the world, surpassing the previous record held by British couple Bertie and Jessie Wood, who divorced at the age of 98 in 2009 after 36 years of marriage.
