The Canadian government has pledged a contribution of 21 million Canadian dollars, directed through the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to support vulnerable Afghan populations seeking refuge in Central Asia and Pakistan. This substantial funding will be allocated to a three-year regional project designed to assist governments and local organizations in addressing the protection, health, and integration needs of Afghan nationals in five countries: Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The financial support from Canada aims to facilitate the integration of Afghan nationals by expanding local basic services in alignment with national policies. The funding will also contribute to improving Afghans’ access to multi-sectoral services, particularly in the realm of health, while building the knowledge and skills of health and non-health stakeholders in health security at borders.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, highlighted that Canada recognizes the significant contributions refugees make to societies and economies. IOM Director General, Amy Pope, emphasized the urgency of providing immediate assistance to vulnerable Afghans experiencing protracted displacement, underscoring the importance of the Government of Canada’s generous act of solidarity and commitment to leaving no one behind. The initiative also focuses on enhancing the capabilities of national and local authorities in safeguarding the fundamental rights of migrants.
