Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has said that, local manufacturing plants in Pakistan assembled 2.35 million mobile handsets in February 2023, while compared to 0.19 million imported commercially.
In 2022, local manufacturing plants assembled 21.94 million mobile handsets, while 1.53 million were commercially imported.
Of the 2.35 million mobile phones assembled in February 2023, 1.87 million were 2G phones and 0.48 million were smartphones.
The PTA data shows that 57 percent of mobile devices in Pakistan are smartphones, while 43 percent are 2G.
Mobile phone imports to Pakistan decreased by 68.29 percent to $447.855 million in the first eight months (July-January) of the fiscal year 2022-23, compared to $1.412 billion during the same period in the previous year.
In February 2023, mobile phone imports registered a negative growth of 36.39 percent MoM and 76.73 percent YoY, standing at $33.054 million.
On the other hand, the overall telecom imports to Pakistan in the same period registered a negative growth of 62.08 percent, standing at $708.798 million, compared to $1.869 billion during the same period last year.
Other apparatus imports stood at $260.944 million in July-February 2022-23, registering a negative growth of 42.90 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.
In February 2023, other apparatus imports registered a negative growth of 57.95 percent YoY, standing at $31.687 million, but a 20.13 percent growth MoM, standing at $26.377 million in January 2023.
