Under the new legislation, individuals found promoting or investing in online gambling will face a severe penalty of up to five years in prison. This has immediate implications for popular platforms; for instance, Dream11, a well-known fantasy cricket app and sponsor of Team India, has announced the suspension of its cash games following the bill’s approval. Other games on such platforms are expected to continue only until the President formally signs the law into effect.
The Indian government emphasizes that this ban is not against digital gaming as a whole but is intended to foster a safer and more positive digital economy by promoting e-sports and educational games.
