ICCI, Romanian Envoy Push for Stronger Bilateral Trade and Investment Links
Romanian Ambassador to Pakistan Dan Stoenescu highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Constanta as a maritime gateway between Pakistan and Europe during a session at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI). He revealed that talks with Karachi Port authorities are in the final stages to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which would establish maritime linkages and give Pakistani exporters access to the European Union’s market of over 450 million consumers.
The Ambassador emphasized Romania’s rapid economic growth and its role as a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe, offering vast opportunities for trade and investment. He also underscored the Romania–Pakistan IT Forum as a platform for digital cooperation, innovation, and joint ventures, while encouraging Pakistani businesses to strengthen ties with Romanian Chambers of Commerce. He assured full support from the Romanian Embassy to facilitate these linkages.
ICCI President Sardar Tahir Mehmood stressed that current bilateral trade does not reflect the true potential of Pakistan–Romania relations and called for efforts to raise annual trade to at least US$500 million. He pointed out Pakistan’s strengths in textiles and healthcare products, while ICCI leaders expressed confidence that the Ambassador’s visit would help unlock new avenues for mutual trade and investment. The event saw active participation from business leaders, including women entrepreneurs, underscoring the growing interest in expanding bilateral cooperation.
