BYD Expands Japan EV Market with 2M Yen Cars in Aeon Malls
BYD, the world’s largest battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturer, is set to launch car sales in Japan through Aeon shopping malls. The company plans to offer vehicles at an attractive price point of approximately 2 million yen (USD 13,180) across 30 commercial facilities nationwide. This retail strategy mirrors China’s growing trend of selling cars in supermarkets, aiming to make EVs more accessible to everyday consumers.

BYD is partnering with Aeon Group, one of Japan’s largest retail chains, to expand its EV sales network. Aeon, founded in 1969 and known for its Jusco supermarkets, operates over 1,000 stores globally, most of them in Japan. The collaboration will allow Aeon to independently manage pricing and promotions, including a discount strategy that positions BYD’s offerings below current market rates. For comparison, BYD’s Dolphin hatchback currently retails at 2.99 million yen (USD 19,720).

Customers purchasing BYD vehicles at Aeon stores will benefit from loyalty points via Aeon’s digital currency “Waon” and receive discounts on home charger installations. This innovative retail model could reshape Japan’s car distribution landscape, especially as BYD now accounts for 20% of imported EV sales, according to the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA). Aeon is also expanding its EV infrastructure, with 2,500 chargers installed across 374 stores as of early 2025, supporting both BEV and PHEV users.
