Private CCTV Systems in Israel Exposed as Cyber War with Iran Intensifies
As tensions escalate between Iran and Israel, Iranian intelligence operatives have reportedly been hacking into private security cameras in Israel to gather real-time information on missile strike sites and troop movements. A former senior Israeli cybersecurity official, Refael Franco, warned citizens to disconnect or secure their surveillance cameras, noting that Iran had been actively attempting to access these feeds in recent days to improve missile targeting accuracy.
Experts Warn of Surveillance Camera Vulnerabilities as Iran, Israel Trade Attacks
This tactic mirrors similar strategies used in other conflicts, including by Hamas during the October 2023 attack and Russia during its invasion of Ukraine. Weakly protected, internet-connected cameras — often using default passwords — have become a security liability, offering adversaries access to valuable intelligence. Despite repeated warnings from Israeli authorities, tens of thousands of such cameras across the country remain vulnerable.
Experts stress that while high-grade, professionally secured systems with regular updates can reduce these risks, most consumers prioritize price over security, leaving personal and public spaces exposed. With Israel and Iran now engaged in open conflict, including missile exchanges and cyberattacks, these compromised surveillance systems represent a dangerous intelligence loophole in modern warfare.
