“HarmonyOS NEXT’s Global Release Uncertain as Huawei Drives Towards Full Tech Independence with Native Apps and Enhanced Performance”
Huawei has officially launched HarmonyOS NEXT, its proprietary operating system marking a complete separation from the Android platform. This landmark release represents Huawei’s response to U.S. sanctions imposed in 2019, which restricted access to Google Mobile Services, driving the company to build its own ecosystem. HarmonyOS NEXT has entered public beta for select Huawei devices, specifically those equipped with Kirin and Kunpeng processors.

Breaking from previous iterations, HarmonyOS NEXT no longer supports Android applications. However, Huawei assures users that major Chinese apps—such as Meituan, Douyin, Taobao, Xiaohongshu, Alipay, and JD.com—are already available natively. The system currently boasts over 15,000 native apps, a milestone that signifies substantial progress, though it still lags behind the extensive app availability on Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
Built with an impressive 110 million lines of code, HarmonyOS NEXT promises improved device performance, reportedly increasing efficiency by 30% and extending battery life by 56 minutes, while conserving 1.5GB of device memory. Despite strong domestic reception, Huawei has no immediate plans to release HarmonyOS NEXT outside of China.
Interestingly, Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT launch coincided with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s meeting with China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology, where Cook expressed Apple’s ongoing commitment to China’s open market. In a broader strategic move, Huawei’s operating system is also set to replace Windows on its upcoming PCs, indicating a shift toward full tech independence for China’s leading tech player.
