36-Year-Old Goat Theft Case Concludes in Historic Acquittal of 5 Accused in Bihar

Aurangabad Civil Court Clears Accused Due to Lack of Evidence After Decades of Trial; Five Other Defendants Have Died Over the Years

After 36 years of legal proceedings, the Aurangabad Civil Court in Bihar has acquitted five individuals accused in a goat theft case from 1988. The incident took place when 12 individuals allegedly stole two goats, worth Rs. 600, and set the house of Rajan Rai on fire in Daudnagar. Rai and his family escaped, but his home was destroyed, leading him to file a case against the accused.

The case, which dragged on for decades, saw multiple hearings without a resolution. Finally, on September 9, 2024, the court, led by ADJ Saurabh Singh, gave its verdict, acquitting five accused due to lack of evidence. Advocate Satish Kumar Snehi explained that of the remaining accused, five had passed away and two others were removed from the case.

The judgment has sparked widespread discussion in the district, underscoring the lengthy process of justice and the challenges faced in securing timely legal resolutions. The five acquitted expressed their gratitude to the court.
