A recent study reveals that tech giants Google and Microsoft used a combined 24 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2023, surpassing the energy consumption of over 100 countries, including Azerbaijan, which has a GDP of $78.7 billion. In contrast, Google and Microsoft reported annual revenues of $307 billion and $211 billion, respectively, highlighting their significant scale and energy demands.
The study also notes that countries like Iceland, Ghana, Tunisia, and Jordan consume between 19 TWh and 20 TWh of electricity annually, while Libya and Slovakia use slightly more at 25 TWh and 26 TWh, respectively. This comparison underscores the vast energy needs of major corporations like Google and Microsoft, whose operations, particularly data centers, contribute substantially to environmental pollution.
In response to their large energy footprints, both companies have committed to advancing the use of environmentally friendly energy sources by the end of the decade, investing in sustainability initiatives to reduce their environmental impact.
