Study Finds Muslims Have Highest Belief in Oneness, Correlating with Life Satisfaction
A German study conducted by the University of Mannheim revealed that Muslims have the highest belief in oneness, a concept known as tawhid in Islamic thought, which corresponds to higher levels of life satisfaction. The study, involving over 67,000 participants, found that belief in oneness has a significant positive effect on life satisfaction, even when controlling for religious beliefs.

Lead researcher Laura Marie Erdinger-Schons hypothesized that oneness beliefs might better explain people’s life satisfaction than religion alone. The study’s results supported this hypothesis, demonstrating that those with stronger oneness beliefs, such as Muslims, reported higher life satisfaction. Erdinger-Schons recognized oneness as a central idea in various religious and philosophical texts and noted that activities like surfing, Capoeira, meditation, and yoga often lead to experiences of oneness with life or nature.
The survey revealed that oneness beliefs varied significantly across different religious affiliations, with atheists having the lowest levels and Muslims the highest. The findings suggest that the feeling of being at one with a divine principle, life, the world, or other people plays a crucial role in enhancing life satisfaction, regardless of specific religious beliefs.
