Chakwal’s Barani Agriculture Research Institute Successfully Cultivates Blackberries in Pakistan

The Barani Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) in Chakwal has successfully conducted the first commercial cultivation of the rare fruit, blackberry, in Pakistan. This marks the beginning of its introduction to local farmers on a commercial scale.

According to agricultural scientists, the journey to make blackberry cultivation possible in Pakistan began six years ago with the import of a few plants from California for experimental purposes. After extensive research and trials, the Barani Agriculture Research Institute in Chakwal has achieved success and is now ready to distribute this valuable crop to farmers commercially.

Experts highlight that a blackberry plant starts yielding four to five kilograms of fruit within a year. The fruit’s market value exceeds expectations, and it is known for its delicious taste and health benefits, including cancer prevention.

Agricultural scientists believe that within a few years, Pakistani blackberries could gain access to international markets, contributing to the country’s foreign exchange reserves and boosting the agricultural economy.
