The University of Agriculture Peshawar took significant actions by terminating the services of approximately 252 employees deemed illegally hired and demoting another 318 staff following a Supreme Court of Pakistan ruling. This decision came after the university’s internal issues were brought before the court, revealing that the recruitment of these individuals had not adhered to legal and procedural norms. The move sparked protests on the university premises, notably escalating when a candidate from the Muslim League-N, accompanied by armed individuals, threatened the life of the Vice-Chancellor and his family, demanding the reinstatement of the dismissed employees.

The threats, including plans to attack and set fire to the Vice Chancellor’s office, were widely circulated on social media, prompting urgent calls for government intervention to ensure the safety of the university’s administration and the Vice Chancellor’s family.
In response to these threats, Bakht Jahan Khan, the Vice-Chancellor, immediately notified the Secretary of Education, leading to a formal request for protection from high-ranking officials, including the Chief Secretary and the Inspector General. The university’s actions were justified by the Supreme Court’s judgment against the illegal employees, underscoring the need to adhere to legal employment practices and maintain a balanced faculty-to-non-teaching staff ratio as prescribed by law.

Despite the dismissals and demotions, the university reportedly still employs an excess number of staff, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing its workforce effectively and within the bounds of legal and financial constraints.
