Zaka Ashraf Steps Down from Leadership Role in PCB’s Cricket Management Committee
Zaka Ashraf, the Chairman of the Cricket Management Committee (CMC) at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has chosen to step down from his position, surprising many as his term was set to extend for an additional two weeks. Zaka had been at the helm of the CMC since July, and the government had granted an extension until February 4 in November. However, on Friday, Zaka tendered his resignation during a CMC meeting held in Lahore.

His tenure faced challenges, with the Pakistan cricket team encountering difficulties in events like the Asia Cup and World Cup. The team experienced a series of defeats, including their fourth consecutive loss in the ongoing T20 series in Christchurch, New Zealand. A significant issue was the failure of both the CMC under Zaka and the one led by Najam Sethi to complete the formation of a Board of Governors and conduct elections for the permanent chairman post.
Even the government, specifically through its Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (Sports), expressed dissatisfaction with the board’s functioning under the outgoing chairman. Zaka’s resignation came just three days after the ministry prevented him from convening a CMC meeting, where he intended to establish the Board of Governors—a crucial step in conducting elections for the PCB chairman for a three-year term.

During the meeting where he announced his resignation, Zaka highlighted the milestones achieved during his tenure. These included a significant increase in PCB contributions from the International Cricket Council (ICC), a historic visit by officials from the Indian cricket board to Pakistan, the home team securing the top spot in ICC one-day international rankings, Pakistan hosting the Asia Cup after 15 years, and reaching an agreement with Cricket Australia (CA) on player development.
The statement released after the meeting indicated that members were briefed on PCB affairs and financial matters. The departure of Zaka Ashraf marks a pivotal moment in the PCB’s recent history, leaving behind a challenging period for the cricket governing body in Pakistan.
