A deputy head of the Russian Mufti Council announced on Tuesday that Russia has successfully erected more than 8,000 mosques and madrasa Islamic schools within the last 20 years. Rushan Abbyasov highlighted the significant progress, stating that prior to the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Russia boasted over 15,000 mosques, madrasas, and prayer spaces. However, by 1991, only 100 remained.

“In just 20 years, we managed to build and reconstruct more than 8,000 facilities,” Abbyasov remarked, underscoring the rapid development in the construction of religious institutions.

The Mufti Council reported that approximately 20 million Muslims reside in Russia, which has a total population of 146 million. This substantial increase in the number of mosques and Islamic schools reflects a concerted effort to accommodate the needs of the Muslim population within the country.
