Experts Warn of Rising South Asia Tensions Amid India’s Expanding Military Spending
India’s defence budget is on track for a historic increase, with government sources indicating plans to allocate an additional ₹50,000 crore in the upcoming supplementary budget. This new allocation would push the country’s total defence spending beyond the ₹7 lakh crore threshold for the first time in its history.
According to a report by NDTV citing official sources, the supplementary funding proposal is expected to be presented during the Winter Session of Parliament later this year. If approved, this would mark a significant milestone in India’s military expenditure, further solidifying the country’s position as one of the world’s top defence spenders.
The Union Budget for fiscal year 2025–26, presented on February 1 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, had already earmarked ₹6.81 lakh crore for defence — a 9.2% rise from the previous year’s ₹6.22 lakh crore allocation. The proposed top-up signals an even more aggressive approach to military modernization by the Narendra Modi-led government.
Sources indicate that the additional funds will be directed towards critical areas such as research and development, the acquisition of modern weaponry, ammunition replenishment, and procurement of next-generation military systems. This move is part of a broader push to enhance India’s strategic capabilities amid heightened regional tensions.
However, regional security analysts have expressed concern over the implications of India’s rapidly expanding defence budget. They caution that this buildup could upset the already fragile strategic balance in South Asia, especially with neighbouring Pakistan and China. One expert noted, “Prime Minister Modi’s emphasis on military dominance risks escalating an arms race in the region, with potentially far-reaching geopolitical consequences.”
Since assuming power in 2014, the Modi government has consistently increased defence allocations, prioritizing indigenous arms manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and strengthening capabilities across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This trend highlights India’s determination to assert itself as a dominant regional military power.
