Hasan Nawaz Declared “Deliberate Tax Defaulter” by UK HMRC; Faces Millions in Penalties

The UK government, through Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), has officially designated Hasan Nawaz, son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, as a “deliberate tax defaulter.” This designation, published on the UK government’s official website, stems from Hasan Nawaz’s failure to pay £9.4 million in taxes between April 5, 2015, and April 6, 2016. In addition to the unpaid taxes, HMRC has imposed a £5.2 million penalty.

According to a legal source close to Hasan Nawaz, he disputes these claims, asserting that he paid all due taxes for the relevant period. He alleges that HMRC’s subsequent demands for additional taxes, made after the legal time bar, are unjustified. However, the source also confirmed that Hasan Nawaz faces bankruptcy proceedings, scheduled to be filed in April 2025. This follows his earlier declaration of bankruptcy by the London High Court in a separate case brought by HMRC.

The bankruptcy order, detailed in the official UK Gazette, restricts Hasan Nawaz’s ability to serve as a company director, although he reportedly continues to hold such positions. Hasan Nawaz was unavailable for official comment, but a source indicated his legal team is reviewing the situation and will respond accordingly.
