President Trump stated, “We will sell billions of dollars worth of defense equipment to India,” highlighting that the move would strengthen bilateral ties and enhance India’s defense capabilities.

The F-35 fighter jet, known for its cutting-edge technology and precision strike capabilities, is currently available to only a select group of countries, including Israel, Japan, and NATO members. While President Trump did not specify a timeline for the delivery of the F-35 jets to India, experts believe their acquisition would significantly bolster India’s military strength.

According to the US Congressional Research Service, India is expected to spend $200 billion over the next decade to modernize its armed forces.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing reporters in New Delhi, clarified that the F-35 deal is still in the proposal stage and subject to further discussions. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35 jets, emphasized that any sale would require government-to-government negotiations. The Pentagon, which oversees such defense deals, restricts F-35 sales to allied nations. Currently, Lockheed Martin is producing three variants of the F-35 for the US, UK, Australia, Italy, Turkey, Norway, the Netherlands, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Belgium.

This development marks a significant step in US-India defense cooperation, reflecting growing strategic ties between the two nations.
