Spain’s Police Chief Arrested in Connection to Major Cocaine Bust, €20 Million Seized
In a shocking development linked to Spain’s largest-ever cocaine bust, authorities have arrested Óscar Sánchez Gil, the head of the national police’s economic crimes unit, along with 15 others. Sánchez Gil, who was in charge of anti-money laundering efforts, had €20 million stashed in the walls of his house, along with €1 million in his office. His partner, a fellow police officer, was also detained. The arrests are connected to the discovery of 13 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a cargo container of bananas shipped from Ecuador to southern Spain, one of the largest drug seizures in Europe.

The cocaine shipment, flagged due to the Ecuadorian exporter’s history with illicit trafficking, was inspected in the southern port of Algeciras, Spain, where the drugs were found. This discovery followed extensive investigations, during which authorities uncovered connections between the cocaine network and Sánchez Gil. Law enforcement has charged the arrested individuals with drug trafficking, money laundering, bribery, corruption, and criminal organization.

The police chief’s involvement with the criminal networks was allegedly linked to his prior work in the narcotics division, where he was suspected of aiding drug gangs in evading authorities. The €20 million found in his home is believed to be proceeds from his long-term collaboration with the traffickers, not directly related to the cocaine bust. European authorities are grappling with an increase in hard drug smuggling, especially cocaine, into EU container ports from Latin America.
