Saudi Arabia’s national airline, Saudia, will introduce an electric jet service to enhance travel convenience for pilgrims journeying to Makkah and visitors heading to new luxury resorts along the Red Sea, according to AFP. The Kingdom has procured electric jets from German manufacturer Lilium NV, known for its innovative electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

As Razan Shaker, Saudia’s communications affairs manager, stated, this new electric jet service aims to connect regions lacking airport facilities or with limited accessibility, facilitating direct travel along the Red Sea coast and for Muslim pilgrims from Jeddah to Makkah. The service will include takeoff from the helipad at Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower Hotel, close to the Grand Mosque.

In July, Saudi Arabia announced an order for 50 Lilium jets with plans for an additional 50, marking the largest eVTOL order recorded. These jets, which accommodate four to six passengers and reach speeds of 175 km/h, reflect the Kingdom’s ambitious ‘Vision 2030’ goal to triple its annual air traffic to 330 million passengers, advancing its sustainable and efficient travel ecosystem.
