Rapid Sea Level Rise Threatens to Displace One Million in Bangladesh, Study Finds

Scientists at Bangladesh’s government institutions report that rapid sea level rise due to climate change is significantly affecting the country’s densely populated coastal areas, with an estimated one million citizens expected to be displaced within a generation.

Abdul Hamid, director general of Bangladesh’s environment department, emphasized in a May report that Bangladesh is experiencing some of the most severe impacts of climate change globally. The study found that sea level rise in Bangladesh is 60 percent greater than the global average.

The three-part study, which analyzed satellite data from NASA and the China National Space Administration over 25 years, revealed that Bangladesh’s coastal areas are facing the highest current rate of sea level rise. Lead scientist Saifullah Islam attributed this accelerated rise to melting ice, warming oceans, and rising water levels from rivers during the monsoon season.

While global sea levels have risen by 3.7 millimeters per year in recent decades, Bangladesh’s coasts have seen increases between 4.2 and 5.8 millimeters annually.
