Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, launched the Aga Khan University (AKU) Manual of Clinical Practice Guidelines— a groundbreaking, US GRADE-endorsed resource providing evidence-based recommendations that are expected to directly improve healthcare outcomes for over 21 million people in Pakistan and avert an estimated 280,000 deaths annually. This achievement aligns with AKU’s recognition as the first GRADE Center in South Asia, underscoring its leadership in evidence-based clinical practice.
Aga Khan University Hospital Launches Pioneering 3D-Printed Implant Surgery in Pakistan
The AKU Manual of Clinical Practice Guidelines marks a pivotal milestone in standardising clinical care across Pakistan. Meticulously developed over four years, this comprehensive resource aims to improve patient outcomes through the integration of global best practices tailored to local contexts, addressing a critical gap that has previously gone unfilled.
Dr Adil Haider, Dean of AKU’s Medical College and Editor-in-Chief of the manual, explained, “This manual is more than a guide; it is a movement to transform healthcare in Pakistan. With nearly 140 guidelines addressing 80% of conditions seen in healthcare institutions in the country, this initiative is a giant leap toward ensuring every patient receives high-quality care.”
The launch coincided with an exclusive Healthcare Leadership Roundtable held in collaboration with AKU. Led by the Prime Minister the event convened 30 of the country’s most senior healthcare leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders at AKU’s Stadium Road campus to engage in a high-level dialogue to advance healthcare policy, strengthen infrastructure, and promote the adoption of evidence-based practices to address pressing healthcare challenges.

The Leadership Roundtable brought together key figures, including Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs; Mr Muhammad Kamran Khan Tessori, Governor of Sindh; Mr Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh; Dr Malik Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath, Coordinator to Prime Minister on National Health Services on Regulations & Coordination; and the senior leadership of Pakistan’s public and private healthcare institutions.
The gathering reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare standards and highlighted the importance of collaboration in shaping Pakistan’s healthcare future. Commending the initiative, the Prime Minister stated, “This Roundtable marks a defining moment for Pakistan. Through collaboration and the adoption of evidence-based practices, we aim to ensure that every citizen has access to the care they deserve.”
