The pontiff had been hospitalized for over five weeks starting February 2025 due to a respiratory tract infection, later revealed to be bilateral pneumonia. His health worsened in March, with acute respiratory failure and other complications requiring supplemental oxygen and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.
