Pakistani Teen Ayesha Rashan Receives Heart Transplant in Chennai after 5-Year Wait

Ayesha Rashan, a 19-year-old girl from Pakistan, recently underwent a successful heart transplant at Chennai-based M3M Healthcare after waiting for five years due to a heart ailment. Her new heart was donated by a 69-year-old brain-dead patient flown in from a hospital in Delhi.

In 2019, Ayesha suffered a cardiac arrest and heart failure, leading her to seek treatment in India. Senior cardiac surgeon Dr. KR Balakrishnan, then at Malar Hospital in Adyar, suggested a heart transplant, and she was waitlisted on the state organ registry. Despite receiving a left ventricular assist device, her condition deteriorated in 2023, causing a right-side heart failure and infection.

With the help of a fund pool and doctors’ assistance, Ayesha successfully underwent the heart transplant surgery. Expressing relief, she stated, “I can breathe easy now.” She plans to return to Karachi to complete her schooling and pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
