Pakistan Wins Global Basmati Rice Battle Against India
New Zealand, Australia Recognize Basmati as Pakistani Product
Pakistan has secured a significant victory in the international dispute over basmati rice, with New Zealand and Australia officially recognizing basmati as a Pakistani product. This decision is expected to be mirrored by the European Union, further solidifying Pakistan’s claim. Historical evidence, presented by Pakistani traders, demonstrates that basmati rice originated in the Hafizabad district of Pakistan, effectively debunking India’s claims.

Historical Evidence Proves Basmati Originates in Pakistan’s Hafizabad
India’s attempts to undermine Pakistan’s position in the global basmati rice market, valued at $27 billion, have been rejected by both Australia and New Zealand. Pakistani exporters, such as Chaudhry Tanvir, allege that India does not produce authentic basmati and instead rebrands Pakistani rice exported to Dubai. Historical records presented to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) further support Pakistan’s claim, indicating that Pakistan was exporting basmati rice to Europe and Gulf countries in the 1960s, while India did not begin exporting until after 1965.

Trade expert Shams-ul-Islam highlighted that while the EU decision has been delayed, intellectual property laws favor the original producer. He asserted that India’s objections lack merit and that Pakistan rightfully deserves the geographical indication (GI) certification. With Pakistan’s basmati rice known for its superior aroma, quality, and competitive pricing, and exports reaching $4 billion, securing exclusive rights to basmati rice is a crucial economic and strategic goal for the nation.
