New Agricultural Trade Agreement Opens Doors for Donkey Meat and Hide Exports, Boosting Pakistan’s Economy
A new trade agreement between Pakistan and China will see donkey meat exported from Pakistan to China, where it will be used as a unique flavor boost for burgers. This development follows the signing of an MoU between Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security and Research and China’s General Administration of Customs, outlining the quarantine requirements for exporting donkey meat and hides. Companies like Hangeng Group will be involved in the trade, with a dedicated slaughterhouse planned for the Gwadar Free Zone to process over 200,000 donkeys.

Donkey meat is a popular delicacy in China, while its consumption is forbidden in Pakistan due to religious beliefs. Pakistan, home to around 6 million donkeys, will benefit from this trade agreement, which is expected to significantly boost agricultural exports. Besides meat, donkey hides are also valued in traditional Chinese medicine, offering additional export opportunities for Pakistan.
With China emerging as a major market for donkey meat and hides, Pakistan has begun establishing donkey farms to meet the growing demand. The agreement is expected to open new avenues for Pakistan’s agricultural and medicinal export sectors, enhancing economic prospects in both countries.
