Malala Yousafzai Launches Scholarship for Palestinian Students at Oxford

During her keynote address at the Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP) fundraiser, Malala Yousafzai announced a new Graduate Scholarship for Palestinian Students as part of Oxford’s Refugee Academic Futures Programme. She emphasized the need to break financial barriers preventing Palestinian students from accessing Oxford’s education. Highlighting the destruction in Gaza, where over 80% of schools and all universities are damaged or destroyed, Malala stressed the importance of supporting Palestinian youth through education.

Malala underscored that the scholarship not only offers financial support but also signals solidarity with Palestinian students. She called for a lasting ceasefire and investment in education to rebuild Gaza’s system, while urging immediate support for students through storytelling, advocacy, and direct funding. The first scholarship recipient will begin studies at Lady Margaret Hall in October 2024, joining a supportive community within the Oxford Pakistan Programme.

Additionally, Oxford University will enhance its support for Palestinian students with a dedicated access program to assist with applications to universities in the UK and US. Malala also noted the $300,000 in emergency funding the Malala Fund has committed to Palestinian-led organizations. As an alumna of Lady Margaret Hall, Malala’s ongoing support for OPP reflects her dedication to ensuring education for all girls, including the establishment of scholarships for Pakistani female students at Oxford.
